So what actually happens in therapy...?

The first step has been taken, you've booked yourself in for counselling. You feel excited and possibly a bit nervous (eek!). Questions go through your head...

"How can I talk about this stuff? Where do I even start? What if I cry?! And what actually happens in a counselling session?"
You're here.
It feels like a major step. Finally, you can offload the problem, situation, concern or dilemma that has been on your mind for days, weeks, maybe even years. It's taken time to feel ready to share your thoughts and feelings but you're keen to start.
You may have spoken to friends or family in the past about what's bothering you. Tried to face it or even run from it. So here you are, meeting me and hoping I can help you.
We sit down and I ask you: "What has brought you in to see me today?"
You'll notice that I am REALLY interested to know what's on your mind, how it makes you feel, what impact the issue is having on your life. I listen intently. You start to relax. We smile together in some moments, share anguish in others.
Talking feels GOOD. You want to say more, and so the words start to flow. I notice your strengths and suddenly you begin to notice them too. The things I'm saying resonate to you and open a wider, clearer view of what you're experiencing.
You may also begin to see things from a slightly different angle.
Listening without judgement to the ways you describe the issue, I explore with you a bit further, 'walking' with you through whatever you describe, gently encouraging and pointing out things you may not have considered yet.
Contradictions, barriers, limiting or unhelpful beliefs are examined. Together we weigh up the possibilities and navigate the challenges.
At some point you've lost track of time. You feel different somehow and a thought crosses your mind that things may have changed deep inside. You feel stronger.
Maybe you're starting to SEE things differently. Or FEEL different. Not so alone. Additionally, you may have learnt a new technique or way to reframe your understanding of something that really helps
It's a good feeling.
In me, you've found an ally, someone who accepts you warmly and provides a safe and secure space to talk (about anything at all). Someone entirely non-judgmental, warmly encouraging and helpfully insightful about the things you're saying and feeling. Someone who is on your team. Someone who gently challenges negative beliefs you may have about yourself and supports you to find more helpful ways to look at a situation.
It is a NEW DAY. And you are on your way!
